"Remembering from the past"
Pencil on Paper
29.7 x 21 cm

Pencil drawing highlighting the history of coffee first being discovered in Ethiopia, by the Goat herder Kaldi, who noticed his goats energetic and not wanting to sleep upon eating the berries. This is shown in the background drawing and the woman’s ring of the continent Africa, with Ethiopia darkened on the ring. This then moves onto the coffee ceremonies that take place today there and which are an integral part of their social and cultural life. This is illustrated in the woman’s coffee mug and how coffee has different meanings for people. Although here there is no precise coffee ceremony, it is still taken as a form of getting through the day or for enjoyment to socialise with, making it no different from being an integral part of our social and cultural life too. The Berries, from which coffee comes from, is also shown as a hairpin on the woman’s hair.
