Conflict can often make everyday activities take on an almost distorted significance and in this case it is in the daily cup of coffee.   I wanted to create a historical piece that juxtaposed the futility of war (World War 1 for example) and the longing for home comforts.
The composition is purposely cramped bringing the viewer right into the heart of the trenches.  With gas mask and helmet at the ready the author’s letter home hints at an almost desperate situation whilst trying to remain purposely upbeat.
The composition is framed with images of my own grandfather’s war record.
